I grew up in Woodbury and
have lived here for nearly fifty years. I had the advantage of growing up
next to several dairy farms which provided me with all sorts of
opportunities for hands-on experiences. Those experiences definitely put
me on the path to a career in agriculture.
I graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1977 with a degree in Ag
Engineering and returned the following year to complete a teacher
certification program. The idea of teaching high school kids was foreign
to me but my college surveying instructor insisted that I try it. Further
graduate credits came along in the 80’s.
I started teaching Ag Mechanics at Nonnewaug on January of 1980 after Mr.
Julius Yale retired. As the new kid on the block, there was a substantial
learning curve that went with the job. As time went on, it became very
obvious to me that this was not just a job, but a very enjoyable career.
In the mid 80’s, Mr. David Breakell retired as Director and I was selected
to lead the ship. More learning curve to be followed!
In 2004, after 18 years as Director, I felt that it would be a good time
to pass the helm over to the next person and now I am back in the
classroom full time. I have the unique experience of being the Director of
this great program for longer than anyone except Ellis Clark himself (35
years).
I also am actively involved with Flanders Nature Center of Woodbury,
serving on their education committee. In addition, I serve as a volunteer
with the Woodbury Lions Club. In the little free time I may have, I cut
and bale hay as a business. I also enjoy restoring classic farm equipment.
My time spent in school with FFA members
is rewarding, challenging, and always fun. I have been a chapter advisor,
district advisor and a state advisor. I have also been a president of the
CT FFA Foundation. Every day is a new one at school and I am proud that I
am the first person in the building in the morning.
