I was born in the early
1960’s on the south shore of Boston, Massachusetts. This explains the main
reason why I have an allegiance to the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots
and Celtics. I attended Norfolk County Agricultural School, which was
located in Walpole, Massachusetts on a 360-acre campus. There I was
exposed to all aspects of agriculture but I mainly concentrated on urban
forestry and park management. I then went to Stockbridge School of
Agriculture were I received an Associates Degree in Arboriculture. I then
went on to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Arboriculture, Park Management and
a teaching certificate at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
During high school and
college, I worked at various jobs. When working for the state I sprayed
mosquitoes. For Chemlawn I sprayed lawns, trees and shrubs. I also was an
assistant park engineer and pond manager. In my spare time, I
reconditioned cars. Before moving to Connecticut, I worked for a tree
service and spent six years with the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
In 1987, I moved to Connecticut to take a position at Nonnewaug High
School. While working at Nonnewaug I met my wife who was at the time
teaching in the math department. I currently have a 4-year-old son and a
two-year-old daughter .
I usually teach the conservation classes. My favorite parts are tree
identification, tree climbing, taxidermy, beekeeping and maple syrup
production.
Mr. Birkenberger and I are involved in teaching the landscaping classes.
My favorite units include plant identification, underground irrigation,
equipment operation and any kind of landscape construction like patios,
walks and water gardening.
Outside of school, I enjoy anything to do with my family such as hiking,
skating and traveling. I also like taking care of my house and yard. At
present, I am busy planning an addition to my house.
