We prepare students for employment in agriculturally related fields and/or for further study in collegiate level agriculture programs.
Our classroom experience is inquiry-based and dynamic by combining practical training with academic preparation. Heavy emphasis is placed on helping students develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and their community.
AGRISCIENCE PROGRAM SEQUENCE
Grade 9
Exploratory year including:
FFA, Safe Tractor Driving, Plant Science, Animal Science, and Agricultural Mechanics
Grade 10
Students choose four of the following semester-long course options:
Agricultural Production, Agricultural Engineering, Aquaculture, Greenhouse Plant Production, Horse Science, Natural Resources Management, Nursery/Landscaping, and Veterinary Science
Grades 11 and 12
Students choose a full year double-period course from the following options:
Agricultural Production, Agricultural Engineering, Aquaculture, Greenhouse Plant Production and Floriculture, Horse Science, Natural Resources Management, Nursery/Landscaping, and Veterinary Science
Grade 11 and 12 Courses Offered for UConn ECE Credit Include:
-Veterinary Science (courses offered on an alternating year pattern): UConn ANSC 1602 Animal Behavior and Training, and UConn ANSC 1676 Companion Animals
-Equine Science: UConn ANSC 2251 Equine Science (two years of enrollment in this class are required for UConn credit)
-Greenhouse Plant Production and Floriculture: UConn SPSS 2520 Floral Art
Cross-Curricular Course Options
The following courses are open to all students enrolled at Nonnewaug High School, they do not need to be enrolled in the agriculture program to take the course.
-Farm to Table (1/2 year): Hybrid of Local Food Production and Culinary Arts
-Agricultural Business (1/2 year) and Entrepreneurship (1/2 year): Hybrid of Agriculture and Business
